La boca, literally means "the mouth", and that is because there is a river (the "Riachuelo" river) that flows into the la Plata River or River Plate (as the settlers used to call it).
This river used to be the first natural port on Buenos Aires. It was located near Caminito. The port not longer exists. Instead we have one of the most poluted river in the world the "Riachuelo" river.
Caminito was created in 1959 by a painter Benito Quinquela Martin. He was an orfhan child, adopted by an italian father and a "criolla" mother.
Caminito used to be an abandoned alley where the train came by to the port to transport cereals, wheat etc, but when it stopped working, the train rail desappeared and the street became a garbage dump.
Thanks to Benito, Caminito is a street museum. He asked his friend artists to collaborate with a work of art of their own that would help to decorate the street.
There is a special guided visit to La Boca in English and Spanish where you can find out much more details of Benito Quinquela Martin, his history and La Boca's attractions like the transborder bridge and Benito's atelier, school, theatre, kindergarden, children's hospital wich he donated to the neighbourhood.
There is "la Bombonera" football stadium in the neighbourhood too, but that's another story.
Don't miss it if you want to know more about this interesting neighbourhood.
